1. DEVELOPMENT OF PROGRAM AND PARAMETRIC STUDY OF REINFORCED CONCRETE SLAB AND COMPOSITE STEEL - CONCRETE SLAB

Authors: A. J. RAUTAL , D. R. PANCHAL

Abstract: The design of structures for buildings and bridges is mainly concerned with the provision and support of load-bearing horizontal surfaces. These floors or decks are usually made of reinforced concrete as it satisfies the criteria of low cost, high strength, and resistance to corrosion, abrasion, and fire. Moreover the beams are also of concrete, so the monolithic nature of the construction makes it possible for a substantial breadth of slab to act as the top flange of the beam that supports it. At large spans and particularly where the susceptibility of steel to damage by fire is not a problem, for example in bridges and multi-storey car parks, steel beam becomes cheaper than concrete beam. By development of shear connectors, it is practicable to connect the slab to the beam so as to obtain the Tbeam action as in concrete construction. Composite construction has proven popular because it combines structural efficiency with speed of construction to offer an economic solution for a wide

2. THERMAL-MECHANICAL MODELING AND ANALYSIS OF SPINDLE-TAPERED ROLLER BEARING SYSTEM

Authors: SEONG-WOOK HONG , VAN-CANH TONG

Abstract: Tapered roller bearing (TRB) has been widely used in rotating machinery because of its high-load-carrying capacity. However, occurrence of high temperature inside TRB, due to the long contact lines between rollers and races and the large sliding friction between roller ends and guide flanges, often becomes a great challenge to utilization of TRB. This paper investigates the thermal behavior of a spindle-TRB system with consideration of rotational speed and radial load. To this end, first, a thermo-mechanical model of rotor-bearing system is developed to provide the frictional heat generation, heat transfer procedure, thermal expansion and transient temperature of the system components. Then, the spindle system thermal behavior is evaluated systematically. Simulation results show the high dependence of temperature on bearing loads, rotational speed. Finally, the steady-state temperature of the system is validated with existing experimental data.

Authors: ALIAS MOHD NOOR , MUHAMMAD HANAFI MD SAH , SHEIKH HUSSAIN SHAIKH SALLEH , LIM CHIH HOO

Abstract: Desalination plant in marine transportation consumes large amount of fresh water for a single trip. The plant is also widely used in regions where very low rainfall but near to the sea. The most important component of a desalination plant is the evaporator. An effective and efficient evaporator will enhance the collection of condensate water which can reduce the occupied space of the plant especially for marine transportation. In this study a horizontal aluminum evaporator with varying outer roughness was used under different feeder water load. The performance of each evaporator was evaluated based on the collected amount of condensate water. In parallel with the experimental works, correlation of variables were derived based on the film wise condensation Nusselt’s equation, heat transfer equation and falling film equation. The mathematical correlation which was non-linear equation was solved using Maple software and the theoretical results were then compared to the experimental result

Authors: RAJIV GUPTA

Abstract: Design of water tanks is a specialized field, which requires experience and sound knowledge of engineering methodologies. Economy and Cost analysis of water tanks also become important especially in case of large capacity water tanks. This research paper presents an algorithm to optimize the tank design and the construction cost for a given volume of water tank using Genetic Algorithm (GA). Genetic Algorithm proves to be an efficient search algorithm to optimize design and cost of water tanks. Genetic Algorithm chooses a proper ratio of radius to height and the cost can be reduced by 20%. Parametric study has also been carried out to study the effect of various GA parameters on the optimized cost of construction

5. KINEMATICS ANALYSIS AND SIMULATION OF A ROCKER- BOGIE MOBILE ROBOT

Authors: IMAN DASHTI , MOHAMMAD REZA ELHAMI

Abstract: For a wheeled mobile robot in rough terrain, one of the known suspension systems is the rocker-bogie mechanism. The high mobility of the robot, moving in 3 dimensions with 6 degrees of freedom makes the kinematics modelling as a challenging task. In this paper, a full 6-DOF kinematic model of a rocker-bogie mobile robot is presented. The A matrices has been derived based on Denavit-Hartenberg coordinate transformation approach. The kinematic equations and Jacobian matrices for the wheels are derived which relates the rover velocity vector with wheel angular velocities and joint angular rates. Furthermore, a rover-terrain model is developed to obtain the necessary joint angles and some attitude angles by solving nonlinear optimization equations. Finally, the robot model is also constructed in MD Adams and simulations are carried out to verify the kinematics model. The results show very close match of kinematic model and simulation in rough terrain trajectory.

Authors: AM-DO QUOC , DUNG-DO VAN , LE KHANH DIEN , TAN-LE KHANH

Abstract: In spark ignition engine (SI engine), the mixture of air and fuel is usually formed outside of the cylinder and ignited by a spark plug. Basing on the way of energy-accumulation, there are two types of ignition systems: capacitive discharge ignition system (CDI) and transistorized ignition system (TI). Although the two types of ignition system are different, they have provided the same high-voltage pulse. This paper attempts to represent a hybrid ignition system that could be used in two distinct types of ignition system with a programmable controller. According to the range of activation of the engine, the controller automatically select between CID or TI system in the optimization of consumption of fuel. Experiment results of the research shows that the hybrid ignition system could reduce the fuel consumption up to 55g per 100km. The CO and HC levels are also reduced to 0.02%.

Authors: ALOIS K. SCHLARB , BUNCHA SUKSUT , DWI SUWITANINGSIH , LEYU LIN

Abstract: Although the research and development of nanocomposites for almost a decade focused on structural properties, these properties remained until today far below expectations, which were forecast at the beginning of the new millennium. However, even if it is well known that the processing history has a major impact on the structure and properties of final components, this aspect was not subject of intensive research in the past. The talk focuses on the role of the manufacturing sequence on the morphology and properties of polypropylene based nanocomposites. In general it can be stated that the incorporation of nano-sized TiO2-fillers improves the some mechanical properties of the resulting nanocomposites as long as the production enables a good dispersion and distribution of the nanofiller agglomerates. However, with increasing filler loading, the morphology of injection molded parts changes: The size of the spherulites and the degree of crystallinity decreases while the crystallization/so

8. DELINEATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF POTENTIAL GROUNDWATER AQUIFER

Authors: HARYATI AWANG , NORLIZAWATI MANSOR

Abstract: Groundwater is a primary source of fresh water in this tropical region. There has been a growing demand for fresh water for various purposes, such as domestic, agricultural, and industrial uses. In order to meet the demand, the delineation of potential groundwater zones is essential. Electrical resistivity method is particularly suitable for groundwater studies because soil physical properties such as moisture content and grain size characteristic can be correlated to resistivity values. The resistivity technique is essentially concerned with the measurement of electrical resistivity of subsurface materials, which preferentially provides information on the different geological layers, structures and the associated occurrence of groundwater. A 2-D electrical resistivity imaging method was employed in this survey work where three (3) resistivity lines were laid. The results of resistivity survey were presented in images showing the subsurface profiles under the survey lines. The result h

9. COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF KERF WIDTH PRODUCED ON GFRP COMPOSITE MATERIAL USING ABRASIVE WATER SUSPENSION JET MACHINING BY TAGUCHI APPROACH

Authors: DEEPAK D , ANJAIAH DEVINENI

Abstract: Abrasive Water Suspension Jet (AWSJ) is one of the emerging non-traditional machining tools used in machining of brittle, heat sensitive materials and composites. Usually machining is carried out by the AWS jet in the air. Presence of air around the jet may lead to jet expansion which results in increased kerf width. In the present research work an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of various process parameters on kerf width using AWSJ submerged in water while machining of Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) composite material. The experimental results indicate that the top kerf width decreases by 3% during under water machining as compared to that of free air machining.

Authors: A. RAJNEESH , B. RAJ KUMAR

Abstract: The results of experimental investigations of a bundle of tubes of an evaporative tubular heat exchanger are presented in this article. Evaporative effectiveness and mass transfer coefficient are estimated over a wide range of operating conditions. Based on the experiments, correlations are derived using multiple regression analysis. Results show that as the cooling film flow rate increases, evaporative effectiveness and mass transfer coefficient increases provided that the air flow rate is constant which is flowing from underneath the tubes of the evaporative tubular heat exchanger. The tubes are subjected to simultaneous flows of cooling water from the top; air flows from underneath with controlled amount of relative humidity and the process fluid is flowing through the tubes. Developed correlations are helpful in improvement of the design of heat transfer devices and many other engineering applications. Consideration of Relative humidity as one operating variable leads to novelty in

Authors: AVADHESH YADAV

Abstract: In this article, the thermal performance of dual sensible heat storage unit in a solar cooker based on parabolic dish collector for evening cooking is experimentally investigated. In the experimental setup, solar cooker with dual sensible heat storage unit was placed on absorbing plate of parabolic dish collector. During sunshine hours, the dual sensible heat storage unit stores solar heat and in the evening time, firstly the solar cooker with sensible heat storage unit is transferred to an insulator box and then loaded with cooking food. Inner sensible heat storage material transfers its stored heat to the cooking pot while the outer sensible heat storage material helps in compensating the heat loss during the transfer of solar cooker from absorber plate to insulator. It has been found that, food was cooked when transfer time is 05 minutes, partially cooked when transfer time is 10 minutes and not cooked when transfer time is 15 minutes.

Authors: DEVINENI ANJAIAH , NITESH KUMAR , RAJAMANI MARIMUTHU , RAVIRAJA ADHIKARI

Abstract: The structural design and development of Solid rocket motor (SRM) is currently based on method of casting solid propellant grain into a metallic or composite casing. In general, SRM is subjected to diverse loading conditions during transportation, storage and firing, due to which cracks may be developed in solid propellants because of excessive loads. Finite element analyses (FEA) based on displacement method, were conducted in order to determine the integrity and the ultimate service life of solid rocket motors. The displacement based finite elements have the limitation of evaluating the distribution of stress and strain on the solid propellants which are viscoelastic in nature. In this paper, a finite element study based on Herrmann formulation is discussed to overcome this limitation in which 8- node quadrilateral,9-node quadrilateral and 6-node triangular axisymmetric finite elements have been developed and analyzed for stress and strain distribution for head and mid segments of so

Authors: K S ANG , S C FAN , Z H CHEW

Abstract: In civil engineering construction, mass concreting of a thick foundation slab is not uncommon. The non-stop operation could lead to elevated temperature above 90°C. It is derived from the exothermic chemical reaction. The elevated temperature favors the delayed Ettringite crystal formation, which would generate micro-cracks and hence deteriorate the strength of concrete. This paper presents a review and a project to validate the delayed Ettringite degradation through a simulated laboratory environment.

Authors: YAN ZHAO , QING HAN , XIAOPING ZHONG

Abstract: The nondominated sorting genetic algorithm with elitism (NSGA-II) is widely used due to its good performance on solving multiobjective optimization problems. In each iteration of NSGA-II, truncation selection is performed based on the rank and crowding distance of each solution. There are, however, drawbacks in this process. These drawbacks to some extent cause overlapping solutions in the population and have an affection on the spread of nondominated solutions, which reduces the diversity of the obtained solution set. In this paper, 4 causes for generation of the overlapping solutions are investigated firstly. A new technique for alleviating this phenomenon is incorporated to enhance the capability of NSGA-II. The improved algorithm is referred to as NSGA-II+ in this paper. In NSGA-II+, overlapping solutions are removed during the truncation selection from the merged population (which is a combination of parent population and offspring population) after ranking in each iteration. Authors: KUNAL HUI , SANDEEP K PRUSTY , ROOPAK PHADNIS

Abstract: Traffic condition in India is highly heterogeneous condition, where vehicles of varying static and dynamic characteristics occupy the same space. Expressing traffic capacity in terms of number of vehicles passing a given section of road or traffic lane per unit time will be inappropriate under these conditions. The problem of measuring traffic volume and traffic capacity of such heterogeneous traffic can be worked out by converting the different types of vehicles into equivalent passenger cars and expressing the capacity in terms of Passenger Car Unit (PCU) per hour. The objectives of this study are to develop capacity guidelines for the traffic flow on NH – 17 and to evaluate the effect of carriageway width and traffic composition on the PCU value of all the categories of vehicles. PARAMICS micro simulation software is used in this study. The PCU values of different categories of vehicles estimated from the study under heterogeneous traffic condition for observed roadway conditions an

19. SHEAR STRENGTH OF RECYCLED AGGREGATE CONCRETE

Authors: KHALDOUN N. RAHAL , YAZZAN ALREFAEI

Abstract: Five longitudinally reinforced beams were loaded in a four-point testing setup to test their shear behavior. The beams were three meters long, and their cross section was 150 mm by 420 mm. All five beams were similar except for the percentage of replacement of natural coarse aggregates (NCA) with recycled coarse aggregates (RCA), which was 0%, 20%, 50%, 75% and 100%. The target concrete strength was 35 MPa, and the ratio of longitudinal reinforcement was 0.8%. The results have shown that the replacement of NCA with RCA had a significant effect on the results. It caused a considerable reduction in the shear strength of the reinforced beams and in the modulus of elasticity of the concrete cylinders. In general, the most significant reduction in shear strength and increase in midspan deflections were observed in the beam with 20% replacement.

Authors: KARSOLIYA R.P

Abstract: India is among those tropical countries where atmospheric temperature is having very vast range i.e. from 0°C to 48°C in various regions of the country. This vast varying temperature range may not allow the engine to perform uniformly, therefore, which temperature is most suited for operating parameters of engines and will give the best performance levels. The aim of this study is to analyze the performance of a compression ignition (CI) engine using Jatropha biodiesel and its blends with diesel as fuel on changing engine temperature to obtain best performance levels. It has been tried to investigate the optimum operating temperature of engine that will deliver the best performance level. The blends of Jatropha with diesel in varying proportions (B10, B20 and B40) are prepared and are investigated in single cylinder, four stroke CI engine computerized test rig. Authors: MANDLOI R.K. , PANDEY AJAY

Abstract: Valves used in passenger car engines, running on gasoline, operate in a very hostile environment that is characterized by high temperatures and pressures, impact loading, thermal stresses, and fatigue loading. These engines, when in operation, result in generation of temperatures that are close to 600ºC inside the intake valve; the corresponding value for the exhaust valve being 700°C to 800°C, respectively. However, the exhaust valve temperatures can shoot up to 950°C for a retrofitted LPG – run gasoline engine. Engine valves, being subjected to such high temperature and pressures, are extremely vulnerable against wear and consequent failure. Wear failure of valves is a commonly encountered phenomenon and the fatigue crack growth has its own role to play in contributing to the failure. The wear mechanisms in valves of LPG – run retrofitted engines have been found to be a combination of oxidation and adhesive wear, though valves also fail due to surface erosion and corrosion. Since ret

Authors: F. HOMAEI , H. SHAKIB

Abstract: In this paper, the effects of soil-structure interaction is evaluated in seismic response of non-geometric vertically irregular steel buildings. Non-uniform distribution of mass along the height of a 10 story steel frame building with fully restrained moment connections is investigated in the framework of random analysis. Frequency-independent spring and dashpot set in parallel was used to involve soil-structure interaction effects in the analysis procedure. The results are compared in form of the maximum mean square value of story drift response. It is observed that foundation flexibility varies demand distribution through structure height. Depend on the position of heavier stories, the maximum mean square value of story drifts change, as well. Compare to the regular structure, mass irregularity through the bottom half stories of structure has the maximum demand difference in case of fixed base model. Among the flexible base structures, mass irregularity of the 5th floor has the maxim
