1. TRACING MULTICULTURALISM IN LAT’S CARTOON

Authors: CHANG SIEW JUEN

Abstract: The harmonious multicultural landscape in Malaysia is rooted in a plural society during the colonial rule. It was a time when the Malays, Chinese and Indians – met and lived together, sharing the same space yet remain culturally unique and apart. This research traces the transformation of pluralistic society into one with a multicultural identity as portrayed in Lat’s cartoons, from his earlier works to the more recent ones, captured the progression of Malaysia’s ethno-cultural and social dynamics from a plural society during its early independence, to the multi-ethnic, multicultural Malaysia of today. Three series of Lat’s cartoon: Kampung Boy, Town Boy and The Early Series are chosen as the research corpus. Two theories: Reception Theory and Reader Response Theory formed the basis for the analysis and discussion of the corpus. Findings reveal that Lat’s cartoon had successfully traced the transformation of the cultural landscape in Malaysia.

2. SOCIO-CULTURAL PRACTICES AND WOMEN’S HEALTH IN TANZANIA

Authors: DAN NYARONGA , ROXANA TOMA

Abstract: This study examined whether female genital mutilation (FGM) is a risk factor for intimate partner violence (IPV) and its subtypes (e.g., physical violence, threat to harm, scream or curse, and insults or taking down), and whether there is a path association from FGM to IPV to depression among women in Tanzania. The study used cross-sectional data from a family and community health survey conducted in Tanzania in 2011. A total of 181 women aged 13-58 responded to the questions about female genital mutilation (FGM), intimate partner violence, and depression. FGM is associated with IPV including physical and emotional violence that are associated with depressive episodes among women in Tanzania. The study findings underscore the need for more screening of both domestic violence and mental health conditions in Tanzania to determine the prevalent of depression among women exposed to FGM and domestic violence, thus yield useful results for planning and implementing mental health services in

3. TUNISIA’S FOREIGN RELATIONS BEFORE AND AFTER THE ARAB SPRING RELATIONS WITH MAJOR POWERS

Authors: AMENI JEBEL

Abstract: With China conducting a very active diplomacy around the world mainly in third world countries and the West crying foul over what they term 'China Threat' in Africa and the Arab world, Tunisia is reconsidering it’s positioning between East and West. Since its independence in 1956, Tunisia made the choice to be pro-western while keeping a certain degree of independence with a doctrine of critical support set up by “the father of the Nation” President Habib Bourguiba. In order to get inde-pendence from the French colonial power, Bourguiba played the US support card while being very active in the non-aligned movement. A small country, Tunisia decided from the beginning to never antagonize anybody and have a strong and balanced foreign policy, offering even to be a fair mediator in certain con-flicts. That was the official policy of the country until after the Revolution of January 2011. Because Tunisia is first and fore-most a North African and Mediterranean country, 80% of its trade was

Authors: CHI-LONG YEN , HUEY-WEN CHOU , LI-RU HWANG

Abstract: With the increasing popularity of internet usage, internet economy has flourished. According to a study done by Institute of Information Industry (2012), the total revenue of Taiwan’s internet business was 562 billion NT dollars in 2011 and 10% of it was contributed to overseas shopping. The study also found an increasing number of Taiwan consumers made their overseas shoppings by themselves via the companies’ websites, instead of using internet transnational surrogate buying services. Previous studies on internet transactional surrogate buying service mainly focus on the investigation of consumers’ intention in usage and consumers’ attitude towards using the internet transnational surrogate buying services. Very little research has been done on investigating the antecedent variables that have effects on consumers’ attitude towards the internet transnational surrogate buying services usage. In addition, whether and how consumers’ attitude towards using the internet transnational surrog

Authors: CHAN-YUB PARK , SE-WONG HWANG , YE-JI KIM

Abstract: In January 2014, Korea experienced a major private information leakage. Many people closed their bank accounts, which lead to a momentary business paralysis. However, certain people maintained and continued to use their accounts. This study attempts to verify the difference between people who closed their accounts and those who did not. Privacy concern, switching cost, and service loyalty was assumed to be factors that might affect resistant behavior. We also examined the effect of resistance behavior on actual outcome. 174 samples were collected through online surveys and SPSS 21 was used for analysis. Results showed that privacy concerns and loyalty had significant effects on resistant behavior. The resistant behavior between the two groups also showed a significant difference.

Authors: CHOONG.C. LEE , EUNHEE AHN , Y.S. CHAE

Abstract: Mobile wallet which manages mobile coupon and membership card in an integrative way is a sort of mobile service which grows fast thanks to its convenience and economic usefulness. However, despite of its fast growth, the increase in short-term users who don’t continue to use mobile wallet has become a critical problem for mobile wallet service providers to create profit. In this paper, to draw major considerations to extend the service use period for mobile wallet users, VAM (Value-based Adoption Model) was applied to verify the factors which affect continuous intent to use. Mobile wallet users feel emotional costs, for example facial consciousness, while using the service, VAM which considers both benefit and sacrifice seems an adequate methodology to study users’ behavior intent. This study aims to classify the factors which affect mobile wallet users’ perceived value into benefit and sacrifice for comprehensive analysis. 10. THE END OF THE WORK- LIFE BALANCE ERA? EXPATRIATES PERSPECTIVE

Authors: ANNA OLSZEWSKA

Abstract: Having a balanced life seems to be of a particular complexity and rather hard to achieve for all business people, in particular it has been considered difficult to reach for expatriates. This study describes how female and male expatriates approach work- life balance (WLB) issues and why, as well as where they see the key success factors on their international assignments. The data were obtained from 20 in depth interviews conducted on Singapore- and Dubai- based expats, age 23-54 across 13 nations. The research reveals that the approach to WLB changes with age, position and can be even industry as well as gender specific. Hence, female interviewees in an overwhelming majority disapprove of the WLB concept, while male expats value this equilibrium highly, although they appear to have a different perception of it. That attitude itself has a significant impact on work- life conflicts and job satisfaction levels. Furthermore, the findings indicate that female expats value cultural intuiti

18. THE TRADEOFF BETWEEN EQUITY AND EFFICIENCY IN THE REFORM OF CHINA’S WAGE POLICY

Authors: QIONG HUANG , SATISH CHAND

Abstract: This study reviews the history of China’s wage policy and analyzes the importance of balancing efficiency and equity in the wage reform. Efficiency means wage increase and equity refers to equal distribution of wages among different segments of society. Due to contradictions between efficiency and equity, each country cannot achieve both at one time. The study shows that the shift from equity to efficiency in China’s wage policy increases workers’ wages but also widens wage inequality. Thus, each government has to make tradeoffs between efficiency and equity according to the relatively importance of the two in society

19. SEPARATION AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO DIVORCE

Authors: TONGYAI IYAVARAKUL

Abstract: This paper investigates the determinants of marital instability when separation is included as an alternative to divorce. Using the data from NLSY79, male income is a factor that significantly increases the probability of staying married. Female income, in contrast to many of the previous findings, does not destabilize marriage. It however increases the probability that divorce is chosen over separation should the marriage end. Children appear to significantly decrease the probability of divorce of women, but have no impact on the divorce probability of men. Evidence also suggests that dropping separated respondents from the estimation does not cause any inconsistency in the estimates of the other choices, but pooling separated with divorced respondents can lead to a misleading conclusion.
