1. PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION FOR DESIGN OF BEAM

Abstract: Particle Swarm Optimization is an optimization technique emulates from social behaviour i.e. birds flocking, fish schooling and bee behaviour and it is also related to A-life i.e. artificial life (human life). It has wide range of applications in almost every field. In this paper we are applying this technique to Civil Engineering field for designing different types of beam loaded with UDL and supported with different support conditions i.e. simply support, cantilever and fixed support for obtaining optimal quantities of area of steel, moment of resistance and shear stress. With the help of PSO algorithm, MAT-LAB coding is formulated. Area of steel, Moment of resistance and Shear Stress obtain with the help of PSO model is compared with the results obtain by different computational methods i.e. 1) By using IS 456-2000 with manual calculations by rounding off values; 2) Using IS 456-2000 with manual calculations without rounding off values, And 3) Excel sheet calculation.

2. NUMERICAL MODELING OF THE CASAGRANDE CUP TEST WITH NEWMARKS METHOD

Abstract: Numerical modeling of Casagrande cup test can be conductedby applying Newmarks method in a finite element program.Casagrande is a test that applies acceleration as a load to minislope that is molded in a cup until the slope fails. Modeling of the test cannot be performed without scaling because finite element program must have its limit in mesh size. Thus, a series of scaling up and down needs to be carried out to match the parameter for obtaining a realistic result. The test is done in a series of water contents to gain information about the change in behavior of the slope, which is then validated by the result of a physical test, on which the input for the modeling data is gained. By doing so, the difference in real test and modeling result can be equally compared.This study aims to propose a method of modeling the Casagrande cup test, which includes the scaling procedure and the reduction in Youngs modulus to obtain the desired result. 3. STIMULATED SURFACE COMBUSTION IN INFRARED BURNERS

Abstract: A permeable matrix is placed in the flow of thecombustible gas mixture in infrared (IR) burners for theorganization and stabilization of the surface combustion regime.A stable regime of surface combustion occurs on the surface ofthe permeable matrix. Until the combustion rate of the gas mixture near the surface exceeds the velocity of the gas mixture,thesurface combustion process is stable. If the combustion ratebecomes less than the velocity of the gas mixture, the combustionzone is separated from the surface and combustion passes intothe flare mode. In our previous works it is shown that theintroduction of recuperative elements into the design of the IRburner allows to increase the heat flow from the combustionproducts to the surface of the permeable matrix and to increasethe maximum value of the specific combustion power for thesurface combustion mode to values of more than 100 W/cm2.However, at such high values of the specific power of surfacecombustion, the surface temperature of

4. SAPONIN ACCUMULATION IN CELL SUSPENSION CULTURE OF EHRETIA ASPERULA ZOLLINGER ET MORITZI

Abstract: This study was intended to investigate the saponin accumulation in the cell suspension culture of Ehretia asperula Zolliger et Moritzi. Soft, friable callus was initiated and grew well in MS medium supplemented with coconut water 10%,sucrose 30g/L, BA (6-benzylaminopurine) 0.1mg/L and 2,4-D(2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) 2-2.5mg/L, with callusinduction rate 93.52% and 92.59%; callus diameter 18.33 and17.00mm; and growth index 3.44 and 3.38, respectively, after 24 days of culture. The callus cultured in MS (Murashige &Skoog) medium added with BA 0.1mg/L and 2,4D 2.0mg/Lwere chosen to initiate the cell culture. The cell culturingexperiments studied the effect of the agitating speed, the initialcell to medium ratio, and the addition of elicitor (methyljasmonate)/precursor (phenylalanine) on the cell proliferationand the saponin accumulation. The cell suspension proliferatedbest at 140 rpm of agitation (growth index 7.81) and 40% of theinitial cell to medium ratio (growth index 7.96). The

5. REWRITING OF DESIGN CODE WITH CONTROLLED NATURAL LANGUAGE TO ASSIST INFORMATION EXTRACTION

Abstract: Regulatory compliance checking is crucial for power grid designs with respect to their safe operation.Traditional design checking depends greatly on the knowledge and experiences of human expert, and accordingly the manual checking is often tedious, time consuming and error prone.Recently, the application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) approach to extract information from design codes written in English leads to promising results. Unfortunately, the robustness of NLP-based information extraction approach should be furthered in order to analyze the textual codes written in Chinese. In this regard, GIM-CNL is developed as a controlled language for rewriting Chinese design code for power grid infrastructures. This study explores the difficulties in understanding design code written in Chinese. The framework of the GIM-CNL and the associated ontology of power grid engineering is also developed.
